Dr. Carlos Ventura: University of British Columbia
Dr. Ventura is a Civil Engineer with specializations in structural dynamics and earthquake engineering. He has been
a faculty member of the UBC Department of Civil Engineering since 1992. He is currently the Director of the
Earthquake Engineering Research Facility (EERF) at UBC, and is the author of more than 300 papers and reports
on earthquake engineering, structural dynamics and modal testing. He is a member of several national and
international professional societies and advisory committees, including the Canadian Academy of Engineering and
Fellow of Engineers Canada. In addition to his academic activities, Dr. Ventura is a recognized international
consultant on structural vibrations and safety of large Civil Engineering structures.
Dr. Dennis Mileti: University of Colorado
Dr. Mileti is recently-retired professor and chair of the department of sociology and director emeritus of the Natural
Hazards Center. He is author of over 100 publications most of which focus on the societal aspects of mitigation,
preparedness, response, and recovery for hazards and disasters. He was co-founder and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the
Natural Hazards Review, an interdisciplinary all-hazards journal devoted to bringing together the natural and social
sciences, engineering, and the policy communities. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the
Earthquake Engineering Research Institute and on the Advisory Board to the U.S. Geological Survey’s Research
Program on Earthquakes and Volcanoes. He was a member of the Department of Homeland Security’s National
Social Science Research Center on Terrorism and was Vice Chair of the California Seismic Safety Commission.
Dr. Eric Frost: San Diego State University
Dr. Frost is Co-Director of the Graduate Program in Homeland Security as well as the Director of the Visualization
Center and the Center for Information Technology and Infrastructure. He works with geospatial imaging and data
fusion as a means to support Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Relief globally, especially in joint projects with the
US Navy and other Federal agencies in areas such as Central Asia, Indonesia, Mexico, Afghanistan, and Africa. His
years with the Geology program at SDSU continues to link him to natural disasters globally as well as alternative
energy, resilience networks, sustainability, global imaging, fiber optics, and cloud computing.
